Genshin Impact — Wikipedia (English)

Genshin Impact's combat looks simple until you realize half your damage is coming from chemistry, not character kits. New players routinely build four strong-looking characters, throw them on a team, and wonder why their damage numbers are a fraction of what guides show. The gap is almost always elemental reactions and role structure, not character rarity. Here's how to actually build a team.

How Elemental Reactions Should Shape Every Team

Every team in Genshin should be built around a core reaction, not around whichever characters you like most. The two reactions worth learning first are:

  • Vaporize (Pyro + Hydro) — deals significantly amplified damage and is the backbone of most early-to-mid game DPS teams. Apply Hydro, then hit with Pyro (or vice versa) for the damage bonus.
  • Melt (Pyro + Cryo) — the highest damage multiplier of the core reactions, especially strong when triggered by a Pyro hit on a Cryo-affected enemy.

Beyond direct damage amplification, Electro-Charged, Overloaded, and Freeze (Cryo + Hydro) are utility reactions worth knowing: Freeze locks enemies in place for crowd control, Overloaded knocks enemies back and deals AoE Pyro+Electro damage, and Electro-Charged ticks damage repeatedly on grouped enemies. None of these are damage-optimal compared to Vaporize/Melt, but they're excellent for survivability and add mixed reaction utility to a team that's struggling.

The mistake most beginners make: picking four characters of different elements without any reaction pairing plan, resulting in a team that never actually triggers reactions and just deals flat, unamplified hits. Before you build a team, decide on one reaction pair first, then fill roles around it.

Team Roles and F2P-Friendly Archetypes

A well-built team fills four roles: Main DPS (deals the bulk of damage, usually on-field), Sub DPS (off-field damage via skills/bursts, often the "trigger" for a reaction), Support/Buffer (energy recharge, stat buffs, or elemental application), and Healer/Shielder (keeps the team alive, especially in harder content).

You do not need a single five-star character to clear the vast majority of Genshin's content, including most of Spiral Abyss. Some of the strongest F2P team archetypes rely entirely on standard-banner or easily obtainable four-stars:

  • The "National" Team (Xiangling, Bennett, Xingqiu, Chongyun) — a Vaporize/Melt hybrid built entirely from event and standard-banner four-stars. Xiangling and Bennett provide off-field Pyro damage and a massive ATK buff, Xingqiu adds Hydro application and damage reduction, and Chongyun's Cryo enables Melt reactions. This team has remained relevant since the game's earliest patches specifically because it needs no limited banner pulls.
  • Electro-Hydro (Taser) Team (Fischl, Beidou or Razor, Xingqiu or Barbara) — leans on Electro-Charged for consistent AoE damage against grouped enemies, using off-field Electro application from Fischl's Oz alongside a Hydro applicator. Cheap to build, strong against early-mid game content.
  • Freeze Team (Kaeya or Chongyun, Mona or Barbara, plus any Anemo for crowd control) — trades raw damage for near-total enemy lockdown, which is forgiving for players still learning combat timing and dodge patterns.

Pick one archetype, commit to building it fully, and resist the urge to spread investment across four separate half-built teams.

Common Artifact and Talent Investment Mistakes

This is where most new-to-mid players lose the most time. A few patterns to avoid:

Farming artifacts before knowing what stats you need. Every character wants specific main stats on the Sands, Goblet, and Circlet pieces (typically ATK% or Elemental Mastery on Sands, elemental DMG% or Physical DMG% on Goblet, and CRIT Rate/CRIT DMG on Circlet). Farming blindly and hoping for good pieces wastes resin; check a character's recommended build before you start farming their specific domain.

Chasing 5-star artifact sets before leveling talents. Talent levels have a far larger impact on damage output than marginal artifact upgrades, especially early on. A character with level 6+ talents and mediocre artifacts will consistently outperform one with a perfect artifact set and level 1 talents. Prioritize talent books (farmed on their weekly domain days) before grinding endless artifact runs.

Building every character to the same standard. Spreading resin and Mora evenly across a wide roster means nobody gets built well enough to clear harder content. Pick your core four-to-six team members and fully invest in them before touching anyone else.

Ignoring CRIT ratio. A rough 1:2 ratio of CRIT Rate to CRIT DMG (for example, 50% CRIT Rate to 100% CRIT DMG) produces far more consistent damage than chasing CRIT DMG alone, which leads to wildly inconsistent burst windows against bosses with tight damage checks.

Bottom Line

Build around a reaction, not a character list. The National Team, a Taser comp, or a Freeze team will carry a fully F2P account through the overwhelming majority of Genshin's content. Spend your resin on talent books before chasing artifact perfection, and concentrate your Mora and investment on a small core roster instead of building wide and shallow.
